Evidence-based & Practical Nutrition Management of the Oncology Outpatient
Malnutrition affects up to 70-80% of oncology patients, making nutrition a vital component of cancer care. A 2022 survey in Ireland highlighted a concerning gap, with 97.8% of cancer survivors recognizing the importance of diet, yet only 40.1% receiving referrals to dietitians. Early nutrition screening and intervention have proven to improve patient outcomes. Oncology dietitians, like presenter Krysty Williams from South Africa, play a crucial role in supporting patients through tailored nutrition care, using tools like the PG-SGA to assess dietary patterns and factors such as tumor type and stage. Krysty will discuss the essential role of oncology dietitians in the cancer journey, including when to refer patients, key assessment tools, evidence-based protocols, and resources like apps to aid patient education.

When to refer to an acupuncturist through the cancer pathway
Katherine Dandridge, an experienced Traditional Chinese Acupuncturist and Herbalist based in Scotland, has been practicing since 2006, with extensive training in both the UK and China. She has worked in oncology wards, providing acupuncture alongside radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and is passionate about integrated care to relieve patient suffering. In her presentation, Katherine will explore when and how to refer oncology patients for acupuncture, covering practical applications such as anxiety management, pain relief, circulation issues, and hot flushes. She will also discuss how to assess the training and competence of acupuncturists to ensure safe and effective care within the cancer pathway.
