ABSTRACT

Krysty Williams, RD (SA), draws upon her two decades of experience as a registered dietitian, focusing in oncology patient care. Her career spans from clinical dietetics in an oncology outpatient clinic to establishing her private practice, the Art of Nutrition Wellness LLC. Williams' journey into oncology nutrition began during her university years when she volunteered with the American Cancer Society and underwent Hospice training. Seeking a deeper understanding of a patient’s perspective, she joined a cancer survivor group at Poudre Valley Hospital. Presently, she collaborates with a multidisciplinary team consisting of an oncologist, oncology nurses, and a social worker.
Raised in Colorado, USA, Williams holds a Bachelor's Degree in Science, Concentration in Dietetics from Colorado State University, complemented by a Post Graduate Diploma in Dietetics from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal in South Africa. Her speaking engagements have ranged from conducting oncology nutrition training for dietitian colleagues and hospice nurses to educating the public on cancer prevention.
Williams' expertise is enriched by her diverse life experiences across two countries. She firmly believes that optimal care for oncology patients is achieved through a blend of clinical knowledge and practical nutrition interventions, within a multidisciplinary framework, while supporting the oncology patient and their caregivers from diagnosis to post treatment.
In her upcoming session, Williams will offer valuable insights into the clinical and practical management of oncology patients. Attendees can expect to gain knowledge of evidence-based clinical oncology nutrition management of outpatients, patient-friendly apps and tools she utilises in her practice.

Malnutrition poses a significant challenge for oncology patients, impacting up to a substantial 70-80% of individuals. In October 2020, a panel comprising international oncology medicine, nutrition, and exercise experts convened to review current research and society recommendations. Their consensus was clear: oncology nutrition should occupy a central role in the care model.
A national survey conducted in Ireland in 2022 revealed a stark reality. While 97.8% of survivors acknowledged diet as “important”, merely 40.1% had received a referral to a dietitian. Alarmingly, a third of those survivors admitted to experimenting with unproven dietary methods and another third avoided certain foods altogether. Compelling evidence has indicated that early nutrition screening, assessment, and intervention can enhance patient outcomes.
Oncology dietitians offer vital support throughout the cancer journey, from diagnosis to post-treatment. Their expertise allows for the assessment of eating patterns along with critical factors such as age, gender, tumour type, tumour location, and stage, by using gold-standard tools like the PG-SGA. Dieticians adhere to evidence-based protocols, providing tailored medical nutritional therapy in collaboration with medical teams.
In addition to nutrition intervention, dietitians empower patients and caregivers with practical knowledge for daily living. This includes guidance on useful apps, nutritious recipes, and troubleshooting tips for treatment side effects. By attending this presentation, you'll gain insights through case studies on when to refer patients to oncology dietitians, the assessment tools, guidelines and protocols Oncology Dieticians follow in the nutrition care process, and valuable apps to support patient education.
