Gentle large arm stretches

After breast cancer, a simple and targeted arm stretch sequence is essential to manage scars, adhesions, radiation fibrosis and muscle tension.
This resource is for breast cancer survivors to purchase.

The audio and video resources can be downloaded to a device, making it easy to use at home or work.

Health and Exercise professionals: This course is for breast cancer survivors, but that doesn't stop you from taking the course.  If this training method and course will benefit your patients/clients - refer them to this unique resource.

Stretches for the chest muscles

There are FOUR main stretches for the chest skin, and muscles.
They can be done while in bed or sitting at the computer.
Follow the audio or video guide until you learn the sequence without needing the instructions.

Why is gentle stretching important

After surgery and radiotherapy, the tissues at the chest can become stiff.
Overstretching when there is tightness or stiffness can cause microtears and pain. In some instances tight muscles will just stay tight.

What else will I learn in this training

Learn:
  • A simple method to see if and where
your arm movements are being restricted by
overly tight muscles or scar tissue.

  • A 30-45 second method to relax and lengthen
    overly tight muscle bracing behaviors.

  • Specific positions for your arm to get the best contract/ relax response.

  • Stretches and trigger point massage method for tender muscles at the back of the shoulder blade.

When should I start these exercises

These exercises can be started as soon as your doctor or therapist gives you the go ahead for reaching your elbow back behind your body.

This is usually the second phase of exercises, seen in most exercise guides following surgery.

Some surgical wounds take longer to heal, so having your doctor's approval to return to stretches where your elbow reaches backwards should be gained.

What's included?

Discover the science of arm stretches

  Practical approach
Follow the audio, video or written instructions for:

  1. A sequence for both arms

  2. A sequence for just the one arm

3. A sequence for the front of the chest or the back of the shoulder

4. How to treat your own tight shoulder muscles using a easy reach trigger point method.

  The science
Science shows that arm movement restrictions after breast cancer can be from:

  •  scar tissue and adhesions and

  • the brain and body being overly protective.

These exercises will help you work out how each of these two features affect arm movements.
Muscle bracing can be easily managed
Clinical experience and research shows that muscle bracing is common following pain and trauma.

Muscle bracing can happen in response to pain, worry, fatigue and stress, so  these special stretches can be used whenever you need.

The 30-45 second contract/relax phase of each gentle stretch will help you gain more movement - if muscle bracing is present.

Master four large
arm stretches

Each arm stretch involves
many different movements.

That's why there's only four stretches.
Repeat practice will
build skills.

WHAT THIS COURSE WILL NOT DO

This series of exercises will not create softness or elasticity in scar tissue.

However, this stretching method will not aggravate scars and adhesions,
which can happen when stretches are too intense.

ABOUT
DENISE STEWART

Denise Stewart has helped women with shoulder problems following breast cancer for 30 years.

Being able to follow people in the months and years after surgery and radiotherapy has shown how arm stiffness can remain a problem for many people.

After investigating the types of arm exercises provided to breast cancer survivors, Denise developed a new exercise sequence. "It was clear a new approach was needed, as the standard exercises were just not helping enough!"(DS)

The FOUR key exercises for the shoulder are called Reach-out-the-Back stretches and
 they follow a set sequence.

These same arm stretches have been taught to other health professionals, who work with people following breast cancer, for the last 10 years.
